The issue of Composite Decking Warranty


Since this article was written we have literally had hundreds of phone calls and emails expressing horror stories as a result of people buying composite decks through builders. We get many calls from wood and plastic composite clients that are looking for replacement composite decking and parts for products that are no longer produced.

The issue of  Composite Decking Warranty is not being addressed by the composite companies. All but 1 composite decking manufacturer warranty that I have seen excludes the cost of disposal and labor to replace the decking from their warranty. This is the composite decking industry telling builders that they do not value their time. This is the composite decking industry pitting our clients against builders across the company. If you are a builder recommending composite decking to a client, you are putting yourself in a potentially dangerous financial position of potentially being libel for damages, ie. you may be bound to supply your labor for free to replace faulty composite decking. Lets face it--if you make composite decking that is faulty, you cannot ignore the fact that to make the client that purchased the composite decking whole, you need to cover labor and disposal of the defective decking. These composite decking companies are relying on slick marketing rather than reputation. 

Evergrain (Tamco), actually offers a 5 year warranty that includes replacement costs--Not Disposal of Faulty Decking Product though, which I find strange. Why not go all the way? Thouugh with anything, you need to do research before buying. I didn't  find many complaints about Evergrain, when I searched, but you should do your own searches before buying any composite decking. When you buy a man made wood plastic product like composite decking, you need to weigh all the factors. Most builders like the product, but how many of them have that decking that they recommend on their own home and are still happy with it. Unfortunately most deck builders never return later to see how the decks they build look 5-10 years later. I see this warranty change as a serious positive in the world of wood plastic composite floor

When it comes to local lumber yards, most have stopped carrying composite decking. Most of the builders I know are apprehensive to install composite due to the now omnipresent rumours of failures and unhappy clients.

As a solution, they tried a new product designed to bond to composite decking. I will be having a look at the coating this summer to see how it is lasting and if it is successful, we will tell you all about this coating system for composite decking. Trex composite decking remains the leader in wpc decking failures, though most are a couple of years old and it doesn't reflect the recent product changes. With about 75% of the market, it does make sense we would hear the most complaints about their products. We have had about 15 phone calls and a few emails in the past year from clients that need warranty service, had contacted Trex and were getting the run around or just no response.
You have to keep in mind that this is the composite decking company with the most alienating warranty service, and has been for many years. Class action lawsuits have twice been initiated, and one was completed that found them libel for damages to thousands of clients. They also had a voluntary broad scale warranty issue stemming from flawed composite decking from a now defunct plant. You really have to temper their composite decking promises due to their history. Trex has since come out with a version of their decking which is wrapped with a coating to address the mold issue.

Firm growth forecast for wood plastics composites in Europe despite financial woes


From a slow start around 40 years ago, in the automotive sector, European production of wood plastics composites has both diversified in its applications and grown rapidly over the last five years to reach 193,000 tonnes by 2010.
A new report (the third on this subject by Hackwell Group) forecasts continuing growth to almost 360,000 tonnes by 2015, which represents -- average annual growth of 13%, but nevertheless a slowing in growth compared with the 2005-10 period, as a result of the continuing difficulties in European economies.
Decking is by far the largest application area with 75% of (non-automotive output), but the arguments for using wood plastic wall in other exterior and interior applications are strong. Much of the predicted growth is still expected to be in construction applications, most of which will be extruded. Important end-uses within the construction sector, besides decking, include siding or cladding, fencing and window applications.

Germany, France and Belgium are amongst the most significant wood plastic fence producing countries in Europe and what these manufacturers anticipate most eagerly are other high-volume applications besides decking. The number of conferences relating to wood plastics composite decking (WPC decking) remains high. Initially it will concentrate on production of WPC profiles for decking and cladding, with railing and fencing products likely to follow.Deceuninck had a very successful launch of its composite wood plastic boards products at the GLEE (International Garden and Leisure Exhibition) trade show held recently in Birmingham, UK.

New Market Report on Plastics Additives


A new market report on plastics additives has been written by a member of the Hackwell Group, Professor Geoff Pritchard, who has organised the technical programmes for Rapra’s additives conferences for several years, and was formerly editor of Rapra’s additives newsletter. Additives are used in wood and plastics composite (about 6% by weight) and are potentially crucial in overcoming processing and performance problems.

The report includes a substantial but fairly simplified technical section, spending a few pages on each additive without going into minute detail, and there is a market section on each additive as well, followed by a discussion of some leading Western companies, and the trends they are experiencing. The report does not discuss Far Eastern additive businesses, except insofar as they impact on Western markets. The conclusion is that the additives business has recovered from a very difficult period but prospects for future growth remain subject to a number of concerns such as oil prices, energy and raw materials costs and Far Eastern competition wood plastic composite decking.
The report contains a great deal of information largely derived from secondary sources up to the late autumn of 2004. Several very recent re-organisations are mentioned but the merger of Crompton with Great Lakes, two of the biggest additives companies, was only announced in February 2005, just as the report was going to press, and it is therefore only mentioned in the introductory section. Compared with most primary–source market research reports, wood plastic product the report is offered at a very competitive price and should prove good value to those who want to get up-to-date with the additives scene.

In the previous version (2006) of the report, researchers had looked at only one deck project: a 16x20 deck supported by 4x4 posts on concrete piers, constructed with pressure-treated joists and composite decking and matching railing. Other features included a three-step stair, as well as a planter and a built-in bench made with the same material as the decking.
The deck was classified as a "midrange" project because of its simple design and small size.Recognizing that pressure-treated decking is more common than composite decking, the designers of the 2007 study added a second deck project, exactly like the one described above except with pressure-treated wood substituted for the wood plastic product.
It was classified as a "midrange" project and the composite deck was then reclassified as "upscale" because of its relatively higher cost.

Nationally, adding a pressure-treated wood plastic composite decking beat out most of the other remodeling projects examined in the study, as homeowners could expect to recoup, on average, 85.4 percent of its cost at resale. Upscale fiber-cement siding replacement had the highest national cost-recovery rate (88.1 percent).
An upscale composite deck had a somewhat smaller return nationally, at 77.6 percent. For comparison, a homeowner could expect to recoup 78.1 percent of the cost of a major midrange kitchen remodel.Regional averages vary depending on climate and market factors — and it's important to keep in mind that within regions there may be variations between states and even neighborhoods.
For both pressure-treated wood plastic floor, the lowest average return was in the East North Central region (71.7 percent and 68.9 percent, respectively). The highest return was in the Pacific region (108 percent and 98.4 percent, respectively), where some homeowners can even make money from adding a pressure-treated deck.The cost estimates for the various projects were provided by Bethesda, Md.-based HomeTech Information Systems , a designer of estimating software for remodelers. Costs for labor, material, subtrades, and contractor overhead and profit — adjusted for regional differences — were included in the estimates.
The estimated resale value of the improvements is based on information collected from more than 2,700 surveys returned by Realtors nationwide; respondents were directed to assume the remodeling wood plastic product had been completed recently. — Laurie Elden

A WPC member can be bent and fixed to form strong arching curves. Another major selling point of these materials is their lack of need for paint. They are manufactured in a variety of colors, but are widely available in grays and earth tones.

Wood-plastic composite


Wood plastic composite decking are wood plastic composite material made of wood fiber/flour and plastic(s). In addition to wood fiber and plastic, WPCs can also contain other ligno-cellulosic and/or inorganic filler materials. WPCs are a subset of a larger category of materials called natural fiber plastic composites (NFPCs), which may contain no cellulose-based fiber fillers such as pulp fibers,peanut hulls, bamboo, straw, digestate, etc.
Wood plastic floor are still new materials relative to the long history of natural lumber as a building material. The most widespread use of WPCs in North America is in outdoor deck floors, but it is also used for railings, fences, landscaping timbers, cladding and siding, park benches, molding and trim, window and door frames, and indoor furniture.[1] Wood-plastic composites were first introduced into the decking market in the early 1990s. Manufacturers[who?] claim that wood-plastic composite is more environmentally friendly and requires less maintenance than the alternatives of solid wood treated with preservatives or solid wood of rot-resistant species. These materials can be molded with or without simulated wood grain details.
Wood and plastic composite are produced by thoroughly mixing ground wood particles and heated thermoplastic resin. The most common method of production is to extrude the material into the desired shape, though injection molding is also used. WPCs may be produced from either virgin or recycled thermoplastics including HDPE, LDPE, PVC,PP, ABS, PS, and PLA. Polyethylene based WPCs are by far the most common. Additives such as colorants, coupling agents, UV stabilizers, blowing agents, foaming agents, and lubricants help tailor the end product to the target area of application. Extruded WPCs are formed into both solid and hollow profiles. A large variety of injection molded parts are also produced, from automotive door panels to cell phone covers.
In some manufacturing facilities, the constituents are combined and processed in a pelletizing extruder, which produces pellets of the new material. The pellets are then re-melted and formed into the final shape. Other manufacturers complete the finished part in a single step of mixing and extrusion.

The production of wood plastic composite decking typically uses a fine wood waste (cellulose based fiber fillers such as hardwood, softwood, plywood, peanut hulls, bamboo, straw, etc.) mixed with various plastics (PP, PE, PVC). The powder is extruded to a doughlike consistency and then extruded to the desired shape.
Additives such as colorants, coupling agents, stabilizers, blowing agents, reinforcing agents, foaming agents, and lubricants help tailor the plastic end product to the target area of application.
With up to 70 percent cellulose content, wood plastic productbehave like wood using conventional woodworking tools. At the same time, they are extremely moisture-resistant. There is little or no water present, thus increasing resistance to rot.
Wood plastic floor are already widespread in outdoor use for decking, cladding, park benches, etc. There is also a growing market for potential indoor uses such as door frames, trim and furniture.
